Warm, spicy, and healing — this Pepper Rasam is your grandma’s remedy for everything from a sore throat to the sniffles! With the bold kick of black pepper and the tang of tamarind, this South Indian classic is as comforting as it is powerful. 🧄🍅
🛒 Ingredients You’ll Need
- 1 tsp black peppercorns
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 4–5 garlic cloves (lightly crushed)
- 1 ripe tomato (chopped)
- Small lemon-sized tamarind (soaked in warm water)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- Few curry leaves
- 2 dry red chillies
- 2 cups water
- 1 tbsp ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)
👩🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Make the Pepper-Cumin Powder
Dry roast black pepper and cumin seeds for 1–2 minutes on low flame until aromatic. Let them cool, then grind into a coarse powder.
Step 2: Prepare Tamarind Base
Squeeze the soaked tamarind to extract juice and mix it with 2 cups of water.
Step 3: Cook the Rasam
In a saucepan, add tamarind water, turmeric, chopped tomato, crushed garlic, and salt. Bring it to a gentle boil and simmer until the tomatoes soften.
Step 4: Add the Spice Mix
Stir in the freshly ground pepper-cumin powder. Let it simmer for just 5 minutes to keep the flavors intact.
Step 5: Add Tempering
In a small pan, heat ghee or oil. Add mustard seeds, red chillies, and curry leaves. Allow them to crackle. Pour this tempering over the rasam.
Step 6: Garnish & Serve
Turn off the flame, garnish with fresh coriander leaves, and serve hot.
✅ Serve it:
- With hot rice and ghee
- Or sip it as a warm, healing soup
